At two-over-par, they were the best scorers among a contingent of seven Guernsey players who played in regional qualifying at Ferndown in a field of 133 golfers – professional and amateur – all vying for one of just eight spots at final qualifying, which takes place at four courses next week.

In total more than 2,000 players took part in the regional section, which are 18-hole strokeplay events played at 16 venues across the UK.

Conor McKenna set the pace for the Sarnians in Dorset having gone out early in the day.

He was one-under-par at the turn having carded eight pars and a birdie at the eighth, and then got to two under with another birdie at the 10th, before he bogeyed four of the last eight holes to end up in a tie for 39th place.

His older brother Rory joined him in that tie later in the day having made a couple of birdies on both the front and back nine along with six bogeys in total.

Lewis Marley was just one shot further back, with the highlight of his 74 being an eagle three at the 10th as he also finished inside the top 50.

Jayden Tucknott had a couple of birdies in his round as he returned a five-over-par 76 while Jake Lowe managed three in an up-and-down day that saw him finish with a 79.

Both Tanner Austin and Joe Marshall had a birdie apiece as they carded 81s.

The leading qualifier at Ferndown was professional Tom Sloman, who shot a 66, while back-to-back Hampshire county champion Joseph Buenfeld, who beat Marley on his way to the title earlier this month, also progressed to final qualifying by coming through a play-off after being one of half-a-dozen players to return a 69.
