The Guernseyman is captain of the England O75s and said the preparations for the big match, which will take place exactly 60 years on from England’s 4-2 victory over Germany to win the World Cup, have been going well.

‘We have our final training session in July to go through routines and make sure that everyone is fully fit and well, because at our age it is easy to pick up injuries,’ said Martel.

‘We played them two years ago down in Wales and we had a World Cup down there and we beat them in the semi-finals and then we played them in Japan and they beat us there, but we found out that they had some ex-pros in their side. Last-time we played them it was a 1-1 draw.’

Martel said that he was confident that the England veterans would give a good account of themselves on the day.

‘Everybody’s looking forward to it, and our team is getting stronger and stronger,’ he said.

The team has been in touch with the German side’s manager to speak about preparations and details for the day, and Martel said the opposition are well up for it.

The match will take place at Oldham Athletic’s Boundary Park and kick off at 3pm on Thursday 30 July.
