Captain Charlton Gauvain scored the only goal of the game in just the seventh minute as the Green Lions defeated Roffey to make it three wins and a draw from their four league outings to sit level on 10 points with leaders Eastbourne United, who have played a game more, and Haywards Heath Town.
‘We were missing a few players, we came here with a plan, and we had a good idea of what they were going to try and do and we tried to nullify that, so it worked out exactly as we thought,’ coach Kevin Gilligan said on the GFC social media channels.
‘It wasn’t pretty in any way, but just so impressed with the maturity of those young players and I think they’ve gone to another level in terms of football intelligence. They had to really think so much and communicate and be accountable to each other. We haven’t been good at that previously, so while it probably wasn’t the most exciting game to watch, from a coaching point of view, seeing how they’re starting to evolve and develop is really exciting.’
There was some concern during the game when goalkeeper Josh Addison suffered a dislocated finger, but help came from an unlikely source and he was able to continue as GFC kept their third clean sheet of the campaign.
‘So the top of his finger was pointing the wrong way, but fair play the referee’s a paramedic, he clicked it back in,’ said Gilligan.
‘While he didn’t have a huge amount to do in that second half, despite all the pressure, he came and claimed a couple of key ones and that’s not going to be easy if you’re not a keeper.
‘Our back-up would have been Archie Drillot going in goal. It always creates a bit of fun and drama, which we had with Faz last year, but I’d rather have Josh in goal.’
