The Green Lionesses are hosting Chessington & Hook United and manager Anna Gauvain reported that her team are looking forward to playing in the national knockout for the first time and also eager to start the new season.

‘We’ve had some really good training sessions leading up to it, but I think it’s exciting as well because it’s the first game of the season. Obviously we haven’t had any league games yet or pre-season fixtures, so we’re excited to get going,’ she said.

The Green Lionesses are aiming to progress as far as they can in the competition.

‘The first couple of rounds will be in and around our level, so if we can win on Sunday then that gives us an extra game not too far away, probably in September. The aim is to go as far as we can in the cup competition and then in the league our target is to finish higher than last season, keep a strong squad together and integrate some of the players from last season and new players in to give them more some game time,’ said Gauvain.

As well as youngsters coming through GFC have two new additions – Zakiyya Qasim and Elenitsa Lambrou – who have come over from Birmingham and are now living and working in the island.

‘They were part of the Cherry Godfrey Cup squad and had a few minutes in one of the games, so it will be good for them to find out a bit about us and us finding out more about them, but they’re both defensively very good players and have experience in the UK leagues,' said Gauvain.

'Where they’ve come from is a similar level, but with a bit more experience living and playing over there so they're good additions.'

Calleigh Hedley is also set to make her return to the squad, and Scarlett Gallagher will be involved before heading back to university in a few weeks.

GFC Women’s FA Cup clash against Chessington and Hook United kicks off tomorrow at 1pm at Victoria Park.
