The Swedish island will host the 2031 edition from 28 June to 4 July that year having previously staged the multi-sport event in 1999 and 2017.

The announcement was made following a vote at the International Island Games Association annual general meeting held in the Faroe Islands, which host next year’s Games.

‘It feels so good that we have now reached the finish line with this application process that we have been working on since 2024,’ said Fredrik Persson, chairman of the organising committee.

‘Now we have five years to deliver a great Games.’

Team Guernsey sent 198 competitiors and finished fourth in the medals table when Gotland hosted nine years ago.

With a population of around 61,000, it will become third island to host the event for a third time since it was established in 1985.

Guernsey became the first island to host three Games when the event returned to the Bailiwick in 2023, with the Isle of Man already lined up to host for a third time in 2029.
