Charlton Gauvain’s first goal of the season was enough for the Green Lions to see off Newhaven 1-0 on a sweltering hot afternoon on the Sussex coast on Saturday.
The goal came early in the first half as GFC made a strong start and they should have been further ahead by half-time before carrying that momentum into the second half, though they had to dig deep as Newhaven heaped on the pressure late on.
GFC will host either Roffey or Hollands & Blair in the second qualifying round at Victoria Park on 12 September.
