Cobo level on points with leaders after beating OVs

Cobo maintained the pressure on Channel Islands League leaders Farmers-Caesareans on Sunday as they made it a weekend of mixed fortunes for Old Victorians.

The Jersey club played a double-header against Guernsey sides at the KGV and registered a convincing eight-wicket win over Wanderers on Saturday, but they fell to defeat against Ollie Nightingale’s men 24 hours later as they became the latest team to feel the force of the Cobo top order.

Having been set 220 for victory in their 40-over contest, Island batters Josh Butler and Tom Nightingale got the Seagulls off to a flier, breaking the back of the run chase within the powerplay.

Unsurprisingly, Nightingale was the main aggressor as he smashed 13 fours and two sixes in a brutal 67 from just 26 deliveries before he fell to the last ball of the ninth over, having played the lead role in an opening stand of 109.

Butler went on to make a half-century of his own as his 54 included five fours and a couple of maximums before the Cobo middle order knocked off the rest of the required runs at a more moderate pace.

Louis Day contributed 27 and Alex Bushell also reached double figures before Guernsey U19 player Evan Le Huray joined Charlie Birch to bring their side home with nearly a dozen overs to spare, the latter finishing 37 not out from 29 balls.

Earlier, a fourth-wicket stand of 107 between Sam Patidar and Beau Gurner had helped OVs recover from losing three early wickets to be able to post a respectable score.

Gurner was carrying on his form from the previous day in making a second half-century of the weekend as he top-scored with 70, while Patidar made 65 with the next highest score being just 17.

Will Peatfield claimed three wickets for Cobo and there were two apiece for Kieran Le Gallez and Butler.

On Saturday Gurner had made an unbeaten 91 as OVs chased down 212 inside 31 overs against Wanderers. He faced 89 balls and hit 12 fours as well as a six.

Andy Dewhurst made a patient 37 while there was 19 apiece from both Charlie Brennan and Louis Bell.

Several of the Wanderers batters chipped in with runs in their innings, but Lucas Barker’s 43 turned out to be the highest score. The Island player struck half-a-dozen boundaries in his 51-ball knock.

The most substantial partnership was the seventh-wicket stand of 48 between Andy Biggins and Harry Johnson.

There were four wickets for Jersey left-arm seamer Scott Simpson and three for Rob Duckett.

Unbeaten Farmers-Caesareans remain top on net run-rate from Cobo, who have now won four from five.

St Ouen Springfield are two points back, but have also only lost once so far and they face Farmers-Caesareans this coming Saturday.
