After taking 10 points from their first four league matches, the Green Lions have not won in the competition for a month and have lost their last three fixtures, in addition to an FA Vase tie, while dealing with a long list of injuries.
Last week’s 1-0 defeat at AFC Varndeanians saw GFC slip to 12th in the table, albeit only three points off the top five.
‘We were really good first half, second half was really disappointing,’ said GFC manager Tony Vance.
‘If we play like we did in the first half and improve our end-product desire, then we will beat most teams. There was a shining light there, but in the second half the light went off and we went back to bad ways.
‘For me it was a winnable game. They are third in the table, so credit to them for where they are, but I would not say they were the best team we have played.’
On a positive note, Archie Drillot returned to the fray last week, George Goubert and Corey Brouard are back for today’s trip to Lancing, who are 16th having won two and lost six league matches, and influential figures Sam Murray and Fin Du Port are close to fitness.
‘We need to start turning things around soon, but I am not very worried because you can only do what you can with the group you’ve got at your disposal and the training pitch is getting fuller while the physio’s bench is getting lighter, which is positive,’ Vance said.
Leon Meakin, meanwhile, takes charge of the Guernsey FA XI for today’s Malaya Cup clash with the Fleet Air Arm at Victoria Park, kick off 3pm.
Previously used as a warm-up for the Under-21 Muratti, the hosts will be fielding a development side despite the Ambassadeur Bowl not being played this season.
