From cobblestones to cat walks – dig ‘70s fashions

The Folk & Costume Museum has geared up for a trip back to the ‘70s ahead of the summer season.

On display at the Saumarez Park museums are mini skirts, maxi dresses, jumpsuits and shoes, all worn by Mrs Coyle in her teenage years.

From cobblestones to cat walks, the fashion exhibition is based on the collection of one islander.

Sue Coyle, nee Le Page, was a normal teenager in 1970, but she still has her entire wardrobe from that time, and also her mother’s.

‘It’s just amazing to have this collection, this is just a fraction of it, but it is so unique to have all of these clothes all worn by the same person, and I think that is what makes it very, very special,’ said Caro Drake of the National Trust.

‘Sue said that when she started working at one of the banks, it was not acceptable for her to wear trousers to work, but mini skirts were absolutely fine.’

Mrs Drake said that the 1970s was the first time a lot of looks were fashionable at the same time.

‘We’ve done a separate case with some examples of mainstream international fashion at the time,’ she said.

‘We often refer that Guernsey was five years behind mainstream, but it was catching up quickly, a lot of these clothes are Dorothy Perkins and M&S, but it’s fascinating how quickly fashion is accepted.’

Images of Mrs Coyle in the ‘70s wearing the clothes also make up part of the exhibition.

There will be a members’ preview of the costume collection on Monday between 5pm and 7pm and it will be open to the public from Tuesday.

The museum is open seven days a week between 10am and 5pm.
