2024 Young Achiever thriving since Pride of Guernsey award

The mother of a boy who won Young Achiever of the Year at last year’s Pride of Guernsey awards has said he has gone from strength to strength since receiving the accolade.

Rachel Rugg said she was ‘very, very proud’ of her son Blake Le Ber, now 18, who earned the award for helping breathe life back into Delancey Park’s dilapidated community garden.

Several months after his win, Miss Rugg said Blake – who has Down’s syndrome – was still attending to the garden every Monday with help from two teaching assistants from Le Murier school.

‘He’s really thrived, he helps out with a bit of everything, from woodchipping to using the wheelbarrow and growing fruit,’ Miss Rugg said.

‘The garden looks amazing now, so many donations of different objects have come in, and to know that Blake has been a part of it all is really pleasing. The TAs have also been amazing, so big thanks to them too.’

He will finish his studies at Le Murier next April.

Miss Rugg said he still spoke about the night at the Pride awards last year and the subsequent confidence that winning the Young Achiever award had given him.

‘It was an amazing night and it was so good that he was able to achieve something like that.

‘We were, and still are, very very proud of him.’
