Nominated by her boss, Steve Byrne, she has worked for the GSPCA for more than 20 years, he said, and is 'still going strong despite being over retirement age, she is always the first person in and often the last to go.

'Yvonne has a heart of gold and not only cares for a department which is hugely varied and diverse, she also cares for the hundreds of volunteers who come through our doors every year.

'You only have to Google her name and you can see the many stories that she has been involved with, from seal rescues to oiled birds, helping the Voluntourists to green turtles.

'Yvonne is often on the front line at the shelter and often has the sad job of informing pet owners that their animals, especially cats, may have been run over. And although this is never an easy job, Yvonne manages to do it in a caring and compassionate way.'

Looking after Duke of Edinburgh Award students also forms part of her role and she has also been a finalist in two national for international animal welfare awards.

'We are lucky to have her as part of the team.'
