Islanders to climb the height of Mount Everest in school fundraiser
OVER the course of this week islanders will collectively climb the height of Mount Everest as teams chip in to raise money for Le Murier School.
The Everest Challenge has become a staple annual event for many groups on Guernsey, and the money raised each year goes toward funding off-island trips for the school's students.
Teams enter and pay a donation to climb 100 metres between them on the schools' climbing wall.
Gary Dovey, the outdoor education teacher at the Le Murier, said that it was essentially a fundraiser that helped provide the students with valuable experience through trips.
'We have five teams every hour at least, though for today and tomorrow we have more than that,' he said.
'With 100, maybe 110, teams this year, it is one of the busiest I remember.'
Mr Dovey said the idea for the Everest Challenge came about when they took a group of the students on a trip and saw the benefits it had for their learning.
