Property owner Rob Le Noury – known as Zeb – and artist Ross Le Brun are behind the work at the house along Route de Rocquaine, which features a large ‘80’ sign in a red and yellow circle, complete with a painting of a B-17 Bomber flying through a blue and cloudy sky.
A propeller from a B-17 that Mr Le Noury found while out fishing in 2014 takes pride of place next to the artwork.
He said the project had all come together very recently.
‘I’ve done something every year since the 60th anniversary, and originally for this year I planned to just do some smaller planes and soldiers along with the 80.
‘I called Ross because I needed some help with the technical bits and he suggested doing it the way it’s ultimately turned out, with the big B-17 in the middle to go with my propeller.’
Mr Le Brun said work on the mural had only begun at the start of the week.
‘We’ve spent more than 30 hours on it in total. Doing the outline of it was quite straightforward, the trickier bits have been the shading of the clouds and the plane itself, as it appeared quite dark on the reference image.’
The mural’s unveiling has already proven to be hugely popular, with scores of passers-by stopping to get a picture of the artwork.
‘We’re both very proud of it, it’s something for the whole island to enjoy,’ Mr Le Brun said.
Mr Le Noury added the mural would likely stay on the his property’s wall until next year’s Liberation Day.
