College students told how to paddle with tide of positivity

OLYMPIAN and world champion kayaker and now inspirational speaker Anna Hemmings visited Elizabeth College yesterday to speak to a number of year groups about achieving their dreams.

Mrs Hemmings is best known as Britain’s most successful female kayaker.

She retired in 2009 and went on to found a leading training consultancy and began speaking to people about overcoming adversity and pursuing goals.

‘There are many parallels in business, learning, or anything else in life, with sport – what it takes to do well is the same,’ she said.

‘Growth mindset and determination, and other positive mental attitude ideas, go a long way in sport, and they go a long way in life.’

She spoke to the pupils about her life story and some of her key messages. These included breaking dreams up into smaller, more achievable goals, ‘to keep ourselves motivated’.
