Two tonne bags full of rubbish left in car park

ISLANDERS should not have to put up with ‘anti-social and illegal’ fly-tipping, the States’ Trading Assets and Vale Commons Council have said after two tonnes of waste was dumped at Jaonneuse Bay car park.

States Works sent a lorry with a crane to remove the two one-tonne bags from the car park. (Picture by Peter Frankland, 21072387)

Commons council president Peter Blake discovered two full one-tonne bags at the car park while driving past on Thursday morning.

‘This is the second or third time in the last year this has happened [on the council’s land] and the chances of us finding them are slim,’ he said.

‘We don’t want to be wasting our hard-earned cash removing other people’s rubbish.

‘If we could find out who it was, we wouldn’t hesitate to prosecute.’

He said he had contacted the States about the possibility of clearing the rubbish.

A team from States Works turned up at around 4pm to look through the rubbish and take it away.

‘The vast majority of islanders care about the environment they live in, and do not want to have to put up with this sort of anti-social and illegal behaviour,’ said Richard Evans, deputy managing director of States’ Trading Assets.

‘Someone has done this with the sole purpose of avoiding the legitimate cost of dealing with the waste they have produced, and instead have left others to pick up that cost.

‘As with other such incidents, we will now look to identify the perpetrators with a view to prosecuting them.’

n Anyone with information about the fly-tipping is asked to call Guernsey Police on 725111 or via Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
