Open-air meeting to discuss plans for Havelet
AN OPEN-AIR public meeting will be held outside the former Havelet Brewery later this month to discuss proposed changes to the road layout.
The unusual situation has come about as the plans involve losing part of the public highway to allow a footpath and for landscaping to be put in.
Currently there is a large area of tarmac outside the former brewery loading bay, which then becomes Les Echelons – the one-way street which goes past Credit Suisse.
Comprop are in the process of rebuilding the site to create 34 new flats.
Project architect Andrew Male said in the past the footpath in front of the brewery had petered out at the loading bay. Under their plans they hoped to create a footpath, with landscaping. There would still be access to Les Echelons, but it would be narrower.
‘It will be a nice project and add a bit of greenery at the bottom of the Val de Terres,’ Mr Male said. ‘It would help enhance the area.’
Mr Male said they had talked to the clubs that organised the hill climb to see if the plans would cause any problems for them.
The new housing development on the former brewery site – Havelet Waters – is set to be finished this autumn.
Mr Males said he hoped the work on the road could be undertaken alongside the end of the project, if it is approved at the meeting.
Planning permission for the work was granted in August 2016, but as it involves a public road, the public have to be consulted separately.
The meeting will take place at the southern end of Les Echelons at 7pm on Thursday 21 June.
While it is being organised by St Peter Port Constables, it is open to all islanders, who can raise any concerns they have.
The project plans are available to view at the constables office in Lefebvre Street or at Raymond Falla House in Burnt Lane, St Martin’s.
