The resident managed to escape unharmed and alerted neighbours, who called the Fire and Rescue Service.

One witness described the flames as ‘phenomenal’ as the firefighters tackled the blaze.

Another witness from a neighbouring property said: ‘I heard a bang and came out of my house, there were flames billowing out of their window.’

Watch commander Matthew Roger said two appliances were mobilised to the fire, which was believed to involve a gas boiler.

‘When we arrived the roadway was heavily smoke-logged,’ he said.

‘As we got here there were people outside on the road, as flames were coming out of a downstairs window of the property.

‘The male occupant was alerted by some noises, discovered the fire and managed to vacate the property and we were alerted.

‘We are currently investigating the cause, which seems to have started in the kitchen area.

‘There is extensive damage throughout the property from fire and smoke.

‘Thankfully nobody was injured.’

The fire happened shortly before 9pm on Wednesday.
