The Original Alternative opened on 11 August and sells cannabidiol (CBD) oils among other herbal supplements.

Owner Tina Bolding said that a discrepancy over one of the compounds listed on an official certificate of analysis provided by the shop has led to the temporary removal of the product from the shelves.

A change in February to the Misuse of Drugs Law, 1974, meant that certain products containing CBD can be sold in the island.

The product is currently regulated as a foodstuff.

According to the States website, the sale of CBD products in the island is limited to ‘products containing an aggregate of not more than 3% cannabinol or cannabinol derivatives relative to its CBD content, by weight’.

Mrs Bolding said as the first place on the island to offer this particular oil they were pleased to comply with the States Analyst.

‘Some products are not on sale until the States are satisfied with our certificates, which we are sure will happen.

‘Being pioneering, it’s not unexpected that this would happen.

‘Our product will be back on the shelves very shortly, we’ve got lists of people waiting to receive their product,’ she said.

A certificate of analysis accompanies every shipment of CBD product which is delivered to the shop.

Last week, the States found that the analysis certificate listed CBD-A as well as CBD in one of the shop’s products.

CBD-A is the raw form of the compound prior to ‘decarboxylation’ – the extraction of CBD via the application of heat.

Neither CBD compound contains the psychoactive element in cannabis known as THC.

‘The shop has been an overwhelming success and we have had some great feedback,’ she said.

‘There is a minor technical issue.

‘We have always been completely transparent.

‘We see this as a positive so that the people can have complete confidence in us and realise the quality of the product.

‘There’s no need for people to be concerned, we’re just giving people peace of mind. We will always ensure that the people of the Channel Islands receive the best quality products, fully endorsed by the States of Guernsey,’ she said.

n The States Analyst declined to comment on individual cases.
