Aurigny, however, has put in place back up arrangements for the rest of its Gatwick flights this morning, sending them to Southampton instead.

'Due to an incident with drones around the the airfield at Gatwick the airfield is currently closed causing delays and disruption to flights today,' the airline said.

'GR602 GCI-LGW will now operate to Southampton at 9.30am.

'GR603 LGW-GCI will now operate from Southampton at 12.30pm, our ground staff in LGW will arrange ground transport to Southampton

'Any passengers on GR605 can call our Reservations on 01481 267267 to enquiry if any space is available on the flight departing Southampton.

'Apologies for the disruption which is out of our control,' it added.

The GR600 and 601 were cancelled and passengers were to be offered the next available flight.

The GR602/603 service will be operated by the Embraer Jet and the GR604/605 will be operated by one of the ATR 72 aircraft.
