The local charity supports adults with learning disabilities to develop their self-confidence and life skills.

It has been invited to join Burncoose Nurseries on its exhibit Over the Garden Hedge, sponsored by Guernsey-based Handpicked Hotels.

Two crew members, Alex Adamson and Alex Houchard, will be going over to London to help with the final build of the garden and to attend the event’s press day on Monday.

They will be taking two bug hotels, which the crew have been working on.

‘I like to see lots of people, so I’m excited for that,’ said Mr Houchard.

‘I made the bug hotels. You put glue inside and then add pine cones and bamboo canes for the bees.’

Mr Adamson said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

‘I’m excited for the experience and to see the different gardens and what the charities have to offer like us,’ he said.

Taking part will give the crew and Grow staff hands-on experience of professional garden build, and they hope will put Guernsey on the map.

‘Our bug hotels will be incorporated in the Over the Garden Hedge stall and we’ll be assisting Burncoose with the finishing off of the garden on the Saturday and Sunday and we’ll be there for the press day on Monday,’ said horticulture manager Stuart Smale,

‘It’s a huge privilege to be able to take a couple of the crew and to see what goes on behind the scenes. Everyone sees the glitz and glamour, but I’ve been to Chelsea in the past and I’m really excited to see how it all gets put together.’

Julia Hands of Handpicked Hotels, a patron of Grow, said she was delighted that the charity had been given the opportunity to showcase its talents and to gain experience that will inspire confidence and encourage future ambitions.

‘It’s a fantastic opportunity for the whole team to see how Grow can be recognised on an international stage at what is the world’s biggest flower show, and the interest that it will generate for the two crew coming with us,’ said board member Marguerite Talmage.

‘We hope it will gain more recognition for Grow. We have realised that we are probably unique in the British Isles. Other organisations concentrate on horticulture or hospitality or retail, but we cover all of those sectors.’
