‘Old Bike Gang’ get together ahead of joining cavalcade

Old bikes and the history and photographs of cavalcades in years gone by have been on display at the Occupation Museum.

Many of the ‘Old Bike Gang’ now take part in the cavalcade on the Occupation Museum’s lorry, but the group met with their bikes on Saturday morning before setting off in the Liberation Day cavalcade.

‘This is the Old Cycle gang revival – we were founded in 1983 to raise money for Samaritans and we have been going ever since,’ said Occupation Museum owner Richard Heaume.

‘There was 30 of us then and now there are 10, but we still meet and go on the truck owned by the museum as we are all in our 70s and 80s now.’

The tradition of being part of the cavalcade is now being passed to the next generation, with some children joining them on the truck.

The research and material was put together by Pete Brehaut, the organiser of the club organiser, and was on display in the museum between 10am and 12pm before the group set off on the coastal route into St Peter Port as part of the cavalcade.

Included among the pictures in the exhibition were several of the group dressed up for previous cavalcades.
