Guernsey Art Network’s free summer 2019 exhibition, Art in the Environment, showcasing the work of local artists, is being held outside at La Vallette for the whole of August. It features outdoor art, photographs and sculptures.

Philip Haynes said it was great to see the artwork outside.

‘It’s great to be able to wander around it,’ he said.

‘I’ll bring the family as it is a bit of a change from galleries that you have to go inside to look around.

‘This is great, I really like how it’s been done and the pictures with the stars are really nice.’

All the work on display has been created by artists living and working in the Bailiwick, who have highlighted the natural beauty of the islands in their work.

Many have also referenced the current concerns over plastic pollution in the oceans, which is an extremely relevant issue at the moment.

The display showcases artwork from the island’s schoolchildren as well, who aware of the environment and the impact they can make on it, have included these themes within their work.

Sarah Leng, 30, from Carnoustie in Scotland, said that she had been coming to the island for many years and the outside display was fantastic to see.

‘I certainly think it’s a great idea,’ she said.

‘It’s a good use of the area to see the artwork here and it’s shaded.

‘I’m going to come here with the children as it’s so impressive’

The exhibition, which has views over the town and Castle Cornet, aims to make people think about the fragility of the environment while also celebrating its beauty.
