In what has been a 19-week-long project, the track has now been fully replaced alongside a shifting of facilities and a relocation of pedestrian paths.

A spokesperson for Education, Sport & Culture said: ‘Discussions within our project team began back in February of 2016 but the track refurbishment project at Footes Lane has been ongoing since 22 April, with physical works beginning on site on 20 May.

‘The works are part of a programme that has taken considerable time and effort from the entire project team to deliver to this point.’

The project has been delivered on time.

The contractor has been working 12-hour shifts to ensure the facility will be handed back to ESC this week ahead of Guernsey FC and Guernsey Rugby Club games this weekend.

Discussions with the contractor are yet to be concluded in relation to the final account, but it is expected that the project will be within the £950,000 budget for this phase.

Guernsey Rugby Club play their second home game on Saturday afternoon at 2.30pm, after playing their first home game on the first XI’s second pitch last month.

Guernsey FC are also in action in their first home game of the season, which is played on Sunday against VCD Athletic, kicking off at noon. Athletics training resumes at the facility tonight.

Education, Sport & Culture president Matt Fallaize said: ‘We have been very impressed by the work ethic of Agripower, and their sub-contractors they have worked alongside to deliver this project on time. We were pleased to see the appointment of many local sub-contractors and suppliers in the refurbishment works and I was personally pleased to see the environment considered as the project progressed.

‘This included the 110 tonnes of existing track surface being removed and transported to the UK for recycling rather than it going to landfill.’

The completion of works marks the end of phase one of the project.

Phase two will encompass additional work scheduled to take place in 2020 this will look at maintenance and improvements to the Garenne Stand.
