Time to honour those who make us proud
CARERS, neighbours and teachers will be among the islanders recognised at today's Guernsey Press Pride of Guernsey Awards.
The newspaper’s newsroom has been transformed into a grand awards venue for the evening, where shortlisted nominees from the 13 categories and their guests will be gathering today.
The event aims to highlight the ordinary people in the island’s community who do great things.
Among the categories are Emergency Hero of the Year, Customer Service, Parish Champion and Overcoming Adversity.
Guernsey Press managing director Mark Lewis said it was an exciting time: ‘The awards night for Pride of Guernsey is the culmination of a process which recognises individuals and teams that have done fantastic things within our community,’ he said.
‘Coming from London, where communities in general are much less tight-knit than here, it never ceases to amaze me the lengths people will go to to make things easier for others on Guernsey, to go the extra mile and to help out in general.’
The event was first held in 2016.
‘Four years into these awards and the nominations were again higher than last year and the voting numbers were higher than last year too,’ Mr Lewis said.
‘This suggests the community at large remain fully behind these awards. The awards night itself will as ever be both uplifting and in certain cases tear-jerking.
‘It’s always a fantastic celebration of brilliant people doing brilliant things.’
Alexander Daniels Offshore is the chief sponsor of the event.
Tonight’s proceedings for invited guests will get under way at 5pm, with Jo and Andy Priaulx hosting the evening.
