Sarnia Cherie singalong at 8 tonight call

TO BRING people together – while still apart – one islander is asking people to sing Sarnia Cherie from their doorsteps at 8pm on Liberation Day.

Claire Tannahill, pictured, is a moderator of the Guernsey Isolation Support Group and hoped to raise awareness of the idea, which was thought up by Ali Hughes, who works at the PEH.

The singalong idea really struck a nerve with Ms Tannahill as she has always loved singing and was due to be in the chorus of A La Perchoine this year.

Her love for singing stems from her grandfather.

‘Many of my memories are stopping with him at events in Town to listen to local performers, especially on Liberation Day, listening to wartime music in the tents and on the piers,’ she said.

Her grandfather, now 95, was really looking forward to this important celebration with his wife.

They have many wartime stories and like to share their many memories with family and friends.

‘My nan told me this virus has in many ways been harder than the war,’ Ms Tannahill said.

‘And because of it we won’t be celebrating their freedom together as we normally do each year.’

The singalong would follow several virtual events put on by the Liberation Day Group and be a way to bring together everyone at the end of the day, including those who are shielding and will not be able to be with their families.

‘My grandparents have been a huge influence on me, they lived through the Occupation, this may be the last year we get to celebrate together and I wanted to do something that meant they knew the community was still thinking of them and celebrating freedom – together but apart.’

She thanked Ms Hughes, Sue Falla and the Guernsey Isolation Support Group for getting this idea off the ground and hoped to hear lots of islanders taking part at 8pm on Saturday 9 May.
