Many attendees were dressed up or wearing capes, much to Edna Mode of The Incredibles’ distaste.

Children delighted as they were read stories and explored the children’s library nooks and crannies.

‘We’re reading heroic-themed stories like Supertato in silly voices and have an arts and crafts station to make masks and draw,’ said Abi Tostevin, Guille-Alles children’s outreach librarian.

Charging in for story-time, the story tree room was full to the brim of attentive heroes.

‘It’s all about having lots of fun and getting ready for Halloween. It’s something a bit different and everyone likes dressing up.’

Superheroes were the chosen theme to engage young readers.

‘Some mothers said they find it hard to get their boys into reading, so comics are a good stepping stone.’

Dixie Fletcher, 6, said: ‘I’m dressed up as a pink and purple superhero. I’ve seen superheroes in books – Supertato and Superworm. They’re funny. Superheroes make me feel powerful and happy.’

Flexing his muscles was the Incredible Hulk – or five-year-old Cian van Schalkwyk, who said: ‘I like Hulk the best because he’s really strong. I’m going trick or treating with my friend for Halloween.’

Powerful sorceress Scarlet Witch, or Rosie Gist, 8, said: ‘I’m meant to be Scarlet Witch, she’s one of my favourite superheroes. She can move anything with her mind. If I had her powers I’d probably move anything that my brother could use to annoy me.’

Joshua Blondel, 4, aka Batman, said: ‘Batman and Spider-Man are my favourite heroes. I’ve got a Superman costume but it doesn’t fit me any more. Me and Connor [Maclachlan, 4] have the same birthday this week and are having a superhero party.’

Shelly Fletcher took her children, Jack and Sofia, along, and said: ‘We come here quite a lot, the children love how the library is set up with all the cubbyholes, nooks and crannies. It’s a lifesaver and so educational.’
