The vessel is currently out of the water on the Bridge to allow engineers to do a refit.

Travel Trident managing director Peter Wilcox said due to a quieter summer season than usual with lockdown, the boat did not need as much work as usual. But these sorts of overhauls were important.

‘There will be a general clean-up and the hull will be pressure-washed and scraped and it will be painted,’ he said.

The big job will be the port engine. The vessel has two engines and the starboard engine was replaced last year. Now it is time to replace the other side.

‘The engine we are taking out has done four or five years,’ Mr Wilcox said.

‘They will be reconditioned in our workshop, so if we have any problems [with our new engines, we have spares] we can swap over.’

It is also planned that the engine room will get a full overhaul, including rust treatments. It is hoped all the work will be completed in late January or early February.

While the work is taking place, Trident VI will cover the Guernsey – Herm service. In the spring it will also have a shorter check, which should only take a few weeks.

Mr Wilcox said next year’s big job was to start on replacing Trident VI’s engines.

He added that the it was very important that the company run a reliable service, which was why spare parts were kept on-island, to cope with any surprises.
