INSPIRING a love of reading is far easier with Vale Primary School’s new junior library.

While the old library was closed for six weeks, students were eager to get inside and read the books.

After over a year of planning the work, designed and funded by the parent teacher association, the grand reopening was a success.

‘There was a library before but it was so old and uninviting,’ said Sharon Collenette, former PTA chairwoman and lead designer.

‘It was all a bit tatty, so Mr Hind and some teachers made a wishlist which they sent to the manufacturers, and got a few quotes. Then they asked the PTA to help and gradually we raised enough through winter fayres and all sorts for it.’

With a teacher’s desk, smart board, and comfy seating for 25 students, lessons will be hosted in the library.

Jess Melniks, English subject leader, said: ‘This is the grand reopening. We aimed to improve the school library to inspire a love for reading. We also wanted a space for students to go to and have the Guille-Alles Library services giving such a good stock of books.

‘Having this bright, inviting space makes all the difference, funded by our wonderful PTA.’

Head teacher Gary Hind said: ‘Our old library was outdated in terms of decor. It’s far more engaging now and is a huge testament to what the PTA can achieve. Everyone worked together in the school community, knowing that whatever we were going to do would be to help support all the children. As you can see on from the reaction on the children’s faces, they are engaged already.’

Olivia Whitmore, 10, was reading a How It Works magazine, and said: ‘I like science. There wasn’t really anything like that here before, it was more just story books. I’ll come at lunchtimes now.’

Joseph Dame, also 10, said: ‘This is definitely better than the one before.

‘I like the tree and book nook, which recommends books like other ones you’ve read by authors like David Walliams.’

Imogen Huxster, 9, said: ‘The sofas are so colourful, and smooth and comfy. I like how it’s improved. It’s got trees and sofas. Before there was only one sofa, which was uncomfortable, but now it’s really nice.’
