Positive Covid case linked to supermarket

SUPERMARKET staff and ports staff were among those chosen for 'targeted' Covid-19 tests at the East Arm testing facility today [31/01] as news broke of positive cases linked to one supermarket.

The testing was unrelated to the incident and had initially been organised to ensure that these areas were being carefully monitored, and to give assurance that staff were able to continue working safely. However, a small number of positive cases were identified with a link to the St Sampson's Co-op Grande Marche.

A States spokesman said: 'The States and the Channel Islands Cooperative Society have quickly acted to close this store today [31/01], deep clean the premises and carry out testing for all staff in order to reopen the store as quickly as is safe to do so.'

They advised that customers of this store do not need to self-isolate unless they are directly contacted by the contact tracing team, but should continue to follow lockdown rules and stay at home, only leaving for essential reasons or their two hours exercise or activity.

If symptoms do occur they are asked to contact the clinical helpline.

Significant numbers of people across the community are also being asked to self-isolate for different reasons, some because they have been directly in contact with a positive case and contact traced by the contact tracing team. Others have been asked to because they attended one of several specific events such as the Festival of Dance, where Public Health said all those who attended should self-isolate.

The East Arm is one area that is now currently working to support essential workers impacted by the self-isolation measures linked to events and yesterday [31/01] the States of Guernsey used the site for targeted testing to allow staff to continue working where it is appropriate to do so.

It had originally been set up at North Beach for vehicle drivers and passengers who were arriving in Guernsey by ferry and was recently adapted to increase the island's Covid-19 swabbing capacity.
