Work is ongoing for events and activities to take place on Sunday 9 May.

The team are closely following advice from Public Health and, while there is no fixed deadline for announcing how the day will be celebrated, a decision will be made well in advance of Liberation Day, giving islanders enough time to prepare.

Education, Sport & Culture president Andrea Dudley-Owen said they understood how important Liberation Day was for islanders.

‘While we are hoping and still working on being able to celebrate together in person this year, we are also looking at digital content too,’ she said.

‘However, we remember the day we want to continue bringing Guernsey together and supporting one another, especially on such an important day for the Bailiwick.’

This year, the commemorative day will have a Guernsey Together theme, urging islanders to take part.

‘We are hoping that if we are able to celebrate in person then local community groups and individuals will be keen to get involved and contribute to the 2021 celebrations by being part of a new community cavalcade,’ said head of marketing and events at ESC, Nikki Symons.

‘We would love to hear from anyone who may not normally take part in the day but would be keen to join us by dressing-up or entertaining the crowd as they lead the cavalcade into St Peter Port.’

The Liberation Day event will commemorate 76 years since the islands were liberated following five years of German occupation during the Second World War. The annual festivities provide an opportunity for islanders to remember the days of occupation and celebrate their freedom.

ESC will announce further details for the community event in due course.
