Nearly 20 of the 92 students in Year 7 are girls and they have been split across four tutor groups.

Eight girls have started in Year 12.

Principal Jenny Palmer said she was delighted to see so many happy, smiling faces around campus on the first day of term.

‘It is certainly an exciting day in the illustrious history of the college as we welcome our first girls into Year 7 and Year 12,’ she said.

‘Elizabeth College is delighted that its aim to be fully co-educational by 2025 has been so warmly welcomed by students, parents and the wider community.’

The senior school had been open only to male pupils since it was established in 1563 by royal command.

But Mrs Palmer said the board of directors had decided that it needed to become co-educational in recognition of the needs of contemporary society.

‘The start of the 2021/2022 academic year is a very special moment for Elizabeth College and we are proud of this milestone,’ she said.
