New Lt-Governor announced
LIEUTENANT General Richard Cripwell will become Guernsey's next Lieutenant Governor.
After completing an extended term, Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder is stepping down in late November.
Lt-General Cripwell is currently deputy commander of Allied Land Command - the standing headquarters for NATO land forces, which is based in Izmir,Turkey.
He said he was looking forward to taking on the new role.
‘I am delighted and extremely honoured to have been chosen to be Her Majesty’s personal representative in the Bailiwick, and I look forward to playing a part in the life of its three jurisdictions,' he said.
'[My wife] Louise and I look forward to meeting islanders and sharing in the rich history, character and natural beauty of all the islands.’
Born in Northern Ireland and educated in Dublin, Lt General Cripwell and his wife have a son and a daughter. He was commissioned into the Royal Engineers, and served in Germany, the far east, Africa, and on operations in the Balkans, the Middle East and Afghanistan.
He was the Administrator of the Sovereign Base Areas and Commander of British Forces in Cyprus - one the UK’s 14 Overseas Territories. He was also Britain’s defence attache and head of the British defence staff in Washington DC from 2015 to 2017. Prior to his current role, he was the deputy commander of operation resolute support - the NATO-led mission to train, advise and assist coalition forces in Afghanistan.
The appointment was announced in the States this morning by Bailiff Richard McMahon.
Sir Ian’s term of office will come to an end on Tuesday 30th November.
