FATHER Christmas will be working from home to switch on the Bridge Christmas lights on Friday, as the public switch-on has been cancelled.

The virtual switch on will be live-streamed on Island FM’s Facebook page and Father Christmas will be tuning in live to press the button all the way from the North Pole.

Martin Search, of Ray & Scott, and organiser of the event, is disappointed that it will be moving online, but said they had to think about public safety.

‘There will be lots of young children very close together and I don’t want it to cause another sudden rise in Covid cases.’

Normally huge crowds would fill the Bridge on the first Friday of December to see Father Christmas switch on the lights, with help from Guernsey Fire & Rescue.

On Saturday, Father Christmas switched on the lights in Town and was met with a great public response.

The great man and his elves were seen wearing masks along with about half of the crowd, as per the advice by Public Health and the Civil Contingencies Authority.

Father Christmas has asked that children who were going to give him their letters on Friday should post them in the magic postbox he has left inside the Guille-Alles Library on the first floor outside the children’s area.

The postbox will be there until Friday 10 December, and an address should be included as Father Christmas is known to reply to children who send him letters.
