Locate Guernsey, which promotes and supports relocation to the island, revealed that relocators generated more than £2m. in document duty for the States.

While most relocations are from individuals living in the UK, Guernsey was also appealing on a more global scale to those living in Asia, South Africa, North America and across Europe.

‘Guernsey has many compelling reasons which attract businesses and individuals to our shores,’ said Locate Guernsey director Jo Stoddart.

‘Among other things, we are a safe, stable, independent jurisdiction with an enviable work-life-balance,’ she said.

‘The Covid pandemic has caused many people to re-examine what is most important to them and, as a result of this reflection, to re-arrange their priorities.

‘Many have chosen to relocate with their families and their businesses to enjoy a better quality of life in a beautiful environment.’

Guernsey had its best open market year in 2021 since records began in 2004, with 127 market transactions last year – 30 more than in 2020.

In the 2021 HSBC Expat Survey, Guernsey ranked ahead of Jersey and the Isle of Man and all three islands ranked in the top 10 places to live and work.

Findings suggested that relocators were prioritising lifestyle choices rather than being driven by career progression or the potential to expand professional networks.

The agency assisted with 45 relocations last year, which was 17 more than the year before. Of those properties, 31 involved couples or families, and 14 involved the relocation of a business.

‘The continued increase each year is a true testament to all that Guernsey has to offer and it’s fantastic to see continued interest in our beautiful island from around the world,’ said Mrs Stoddart.

‘The team continues to promote Guernsey internationally and we anticipate 2022 will be another busy year.’

Enquiries from those seeking information or advice on how to move to the island totalled 356 in 2020, which was a 64% increase on the year before.

The open market makes up about 6% of the island’s 27,000 residential properties, but sales from locals and relocators made up about 11% of all transactions last year. Overall, open market sales saw a 30% rise compared to 2020.

‘It is very encouraging to see another successful year as more and more families and business owners see the appeal of the island,’ said committee president Deputy Neil Inder.

‘The wealth of experience and talent which these economically active relocators contribute to our business community should not be underestimated.

‘They bring new ideas, knowledge and expertise which is of benefit to the island while creating new jobs and investing in the island’s community and infrastructure.’
