Lasting powers of attorney allow an individual to be able to plan for their future and put in place arrangements to support them at a time when they may no longer have capacity to decide for themselves.
They became available from Friday and application forms for registering an LPA will soon be available from the Royal Court website or for collection from the Greffe.
‘We know that the introduction of LPAs is an important and much-anticipated development and the committee has received many enquiries about this,’ said Health & Social Care president Al Brouard.
‘I am delighted that the States has approved the ordinances and that members of the public will be able to access this important tool to manage their affairs.’
Two different types of LPA are available – one for health and welfare matters and a second for property and financial affairs. The fee for one registration is £80 and £100 for both if completed at the same time. Subsequent activation of an LPA will not be charged.
Completed registration forms should be returned to the Greffe and registration staff will contact applicants to arrange an appointment.
Applications no longer require the involvement of an advocate, but they can be used if the applicant wishes.
