Simple steps can save finite water resources

FIXING dripping taps, taking shorter showers, and re-considering the use of pressure washers are all small steps to make a difference in saving water, said Guernsey Water water quality risk manager Margaret McGuinness.

Today marks the beginning of Water Saving Week, a campaign run by non-profit organisation Waterwise, which aims to encourage people to use water wisely.

‘It’s a message we continue to promote,’ Mrs McGuinness said.

‘Just a few simple steps can really help to make a big difference and contribute towards saving water across the island.’

These can be as simple as washing cars with a bucket and sponge rather than a hose, or not leaving the tap running while brushing your teeth.

‘We are a small island so are very much limited in the amount of water resources we have,’ Mrs McGuinness added.

‘Reducing wasted water not only saves money but can make a big difference to the environment too.’

Rain water is collected by Guernsey Water throughout the year, particularly during the ‘re-charge period’ between October and April, when there tends to be the most rainfall.

Guernsey Water currently has about 11 months worth of water stored, but Mrs McGuinness said climate change could cause more unpredictable weather.

‘Nobody really knows the impact of climate change at the moment but it is looking like we are going to have more unpredictable rainfall.’

Fortunately there have been no major pipe bursts this year, and Mrs McGuinness hoped islanders would do their bit to save water.

‘The message is slowly but surely getting through to people – people are a lot more cautious about their water usage on the island,’ she added.

‘It’s all the little things that contribute to it.’
