PLANTERS placed at the pedestrian crossing from the North Beach car park to the Liberation Monument have been rearranged to help people with restricted mobility or visual impairments.

The six large grey planters appeared last week after Guernsey Ports moved to prevent cyclists riding across the crossing.

Harbour master Captain David Barker said that the move was also to encourage pedestrians to stop and check that the road was clear before crossing.

Carol Le Page, of the Guernsey Disability Alliance, said the group was contacted by the Guernsey Blind Association, which was concerned that the planters could cause a problem for people who were visually impaired.

‘It was also about wheelchair access,’ said Mrs Le Page. ‘We contacted the States’ disability officer.’

Captain Barker said the disability officer then got in touch with Guernsey Ports.

‘Adjustments have been made to better cater for those with restricted mobility or visual impairment,’ he said.
