Eisteddfod allows islanders to showcase their talents

Following November’s successful performing arts sign-ups, which attracted around 1,300 entrants, islanders entered in variety of categories including photography, floral arrangement and literary work.

‘It’s a great showcase for all island talent. Where else would everyone display their gifts?’ said Eisteddfod general secretary Barbara Minta.

Julien Bougourd, 16, was entering into the photography section for the first time with a selection of wildlife nature shots and was excited to see what the judges had to say.

‘I’m looking to gain a bit of experience and some feedback on what I do,’ he said.

Regular Eisteddfod participant, Linda Coutu, 75, was making rag rugs out of recyclable material for the festival and was pleased to be able to have her art on display.

‘It’s good to be able to show the things I’ve been making,’ she said.

Another photographer was 14-year-old Guy O’Regan-Le Page, who was entering for the second time.

He too is a wildlife photographer, with a specific interest in bird photos which he put forward to be judged, including one of a kestrel.

‘I enjoy the competition,’ he said.

In the floral section, Guernsey hosting the 2023 Island Games will be celebrated with a theme named The Sporting Life, with entries being designed for children, youths, novices and there are several classes open to all.

Examples include Olympic rings, skate park and water sports.

Preparations from the vast number of volunteers have now hit a sixth gear with the 2023 Eisteddfod sessions starting in a month’s time when they will continue their hard work behind the scenes.

‘The team of volunteers running each section will be very busy throughout the time that their section is running, the festival lasts for about a month so many people are needed to ensure its success,’ said Mrs Minta.
