A total of 456 babies, 218 girls and 238 boys, were born locally in 2023.

This is lower than the total from 2022 when there were just over 500 births.

Mia was the most popular first name for a girl, being chosen for five children.

Millie was the next most popular, chosen four times. Ada, Charlotte, Florence, Isla, Sophia and Willow were all chosen as a first name three times, with Sophia also being chosen as a middle name once, and Willow twice. Mae and its variants appeared as part of a first name or middle name on 11 occasions, while Elizabeth was a popular middle name choice, being chosen seven times, as well as twice for a first name.

2022’s most popular girls’ first name was Ava, chosen nine times, but last year it did not feature at all.

Daisy, 2022’s second most popular girls’ first name, was only chosen once.

For boys, Harry topped the list with seven first names, closely followed by Oliver with six.

Finley and Jack were the next most popular with five, with Jack featuring the same number of times as it did in 2022 when it was the joint most popular.

Jack was also chosen three times as a middle name. Hugo, Lando, Leo, Luca and Rupert were all given as first names on four occasions.

The most popular middle name for boys by far was James, featuring 22 times. However, it was only used as a first name once, down from four in 2022.

More traditional names such as George, Thomas and David also all featured prominently as middle names – on seven, six and eight occasions respectively – but rarely as first names.

George was only chosen twice as a first name, while Thomas and David were not chosen at all.

However, Tommy was used as a first name twice.

2022’s other joint most popular boys’ first name was Freddie, chosen for five babies, but it was only selected once this year.

  • Baby names can be registered up to 30 days after the birth. This is why the full details of the 2023 birth names were not available until February 2024.
