TV’s Susan Calman has a ‘Grand Day Out’ in island
The Little Chapel, coppersmithing and Castle Cornet are set to feature in the new series of Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out tonight.
The comedian is returning for a seventh season on Channel 5.
The series follows her exploring the British Isles in her vintage campervan Helen.
The distinctive white and orange van made it hard for the visit to be kept quiet, with Guernsey’s head of heritage services Helen Glencross sharing a picture of the vehicle on Castle Emplacement in May on social media.
Susan fired the noon day gun during her visit to the island.
Castle keeper Shaun Marsh helped her with the firing and presented her with the gun wire from the charge she fired.
‘She was a great laugh,’ he said.
‘She was really interested in the gun, as it is Scottish.’
The new show trailer shows her looking around the Little Chapel.
She learnt about sea swimming in the island and visited La Vallette bathing pools, as well as following in the footsteps of Renoir by visiting Moulin Huet.
She also visited a local coppersmith and helped make a Guernsey can.
A Visit Guernsey spokeswoman said it was good publicity for the island.
‘We were delighted to welcome Susan and her vintage campervan Helen to Guernsey in May to experience the island’s charm and quirks first-hand, all making for a Grand Day Out,’ she said.
‘As well as stopping off at Moulin Huet Bay, Susan visited the Little Chapel and had a go at firing the noon day gun. We are thrilled she visited some of our island gems and met some of the island’s characters on her travels, putting Guernsey on the map to her many viewers.’
She also visited Jersey as part of the show and shared a picture of herself arriving in Guernsey on the ferry on social media in May.
It is the show’s first visit to the Channel Islands.
The programme will air at 9pm tonight on Channel 5.
