Long queues marks the return of Castle Nights

THIS year’s series of KPMG Castle Nights was chilly, but, despite the threat of rain, dry, and as popular as ever.

Half an hour before gates of Castle Cornet opened there was already a queue of more than 100 people waiting for the free event to start at 6pm.

At the front were Kim and Joe Abbotts who had brought friends from the UK, Lynne and Dirk Dekker.

‘We got here just before 5pm. We have arrived at a quarter to six before and only just got in,’ said Mrs Abbotts. ‘We weren’t alone for long and the queue has grown quickly behind us.

‘We didn’t come to any last year but came to two the year before that. We have been here when its pouring with rain so tonight isn’t that bad. We have a picnic, blankets and Prosecco to keep us warm.’

The friends were particularly looking forward to seeing the singers from Gadoc.

‘We saw them at the arts Seafront Sunday, where they did some songs from Les Miserables and were amazing – better than professional choirs we have seen.’

There was a wide variety of musical entertainment on offer.

Just behind them were Philomena and Dawn Pipet.

‘We have been coming since they started, and I have lost count of how many years ago that was,’ said Mrs Pipet. ‘There is always such a good variety of acts as they cater for an eclectic taste of music.’

They were also looking forward to seeing Gadoc and local band The Vinyls. ‘They do all the favourite pop and rock songs and are great for a sing-along.’

Further back in the queue was first-timer Sarah Morellec, there with a group of 12 friends and their children, and well-equipped with a stack of six takeaway pizzas.

‘We thought it would be a great summer activity, especially for the kids,’ she said. ‘We have been meaning to come for ages and thought we should get here early because we have seen photos of the queues before.

‘If it’s good we will be coming back again – especially if the sun finally comes out.’
