King’s Mills road closes after wall collapses
The collapse of a large section of a property’s wall in King’s Mills forced the closure of a section of Les Grands Moulins late on New Year’s Day.
It is suspected that heavy rainfall caused the collapse of the wall, which occurred at the site of the former Curle’s Garden Centre near the Fleur du Jardin hotel at about 10.50pm.
Les Grands Moulins has been closed between the junctions of Route de la Hurette and Rue a L’Eau.
The damage to the wall is extensive, with debris having been strewn across the road.
A team from Bob Froome was busy clearing the road yesterday morning with industrial equipment, including a digger.
Fleur du Jardin manager Jojo Estaban arrives at work by bus, and was surprised to find it diverting yesterday morning, which meant she had a longer walk to work than normal. She said the closure had also caused some problems for hotel patrons.
‘Most of our tables have been late today due to the closure, but we have managed.’
Due to the unexpected wall fall, there was no diversion signage yesterday morning – just road closure signs on each side of the closure.
This left patrons confused about which way to access the hotel.
Entry is possible from the western end of Les Grands Moulins, with barriers blocking the road closer to the scene of the incident.
According to Traffic & Highway Services’ online road information map, the road is set to remain shut until next Tuesday to allow for repairs to continue.
This is not the first time the tall wall has had problems.
It also collapsed in late 2003. The wall lies at the bottom of a steep hill, which stretches up to Grantez Mill.
