Trefoil Guides want to see more women joining
‘Girlguiding is not just for girls’ is the message from Guernsey’s Trefoil Guides, who would like to see more women join their numbers.
Trefoil Guides are a branch of Girlguiding that provides Guiding for adults. There are currently around 50 members on the island, split into two guilds – the Sarnia Guild and the Guernsey Guild.
They held their joint AGM at Les Cotils.
‘We are really trying to promote the trefoil guides, and encourage more women to join,’ said island Trefoil chairwoman Jenny Falla.
‘Trefoil guides is about finding friendship, giving support, being active and getting involved.
‘You don’t have to have been a girl guide to be a member and anyone can join. We have members in their 20s to in their 90s.
‘We still do badges, but they are a bit different from the Girl Guides badges and more like challenges.’
Last year members took part in events for a motivational badge and did air, sea and land challenges.
‘We fit it to ability, for land some of us caught buses around the island, for sea it was swimming, and for air it was a walk up Victoria Tower or some drone flying.
‘This year’s theme is heritage. We are part of the south-west region, which is made up of 16 areas and we are joining forces with them.
‘Unfortunately, being on an island, we can’t always join in with their trips. We are hoping to do some of our own to historical Guernsey locations, perhaps travelling in classic cars.’
The Trefoil Guides were officially formed in 1943 from various groups of old guides and there has been an association on the island almost from the start.
Guest speaker at the AGM was Deputy Bailiff Jessica Roland.
‘She gave us a wonderful talk.’ said Mrs Falla.
‘And said how being a Brownie, a Guide, and a Ranger, with all of the outdoor activities that had allowed her to participate in, had really contributed to her own development and success.’
