Deputy de Sausmarez, president of the Environment & Infrastructure Committee, was the only candidate to receive more than 10,000 votes.
She was also one of only two major committee presidents to hold on to her spot in the Assembly.
‘I’m really, really surprised, quite stunned,’ she said.
‘I can’t get my head around it yet, and I don’t think I will be able to fully absorb it until I’ve been able to look at the results.’

Asked what she thought had convinced voters to support her, she said the emphasis she had placed on collaborative working with other committees and individuals in the States could have been a factor.
‘That was something that wasn’t in as much evidence as we might have liked last term, but it did happen, and I’m really proud of all the times we did manage to work collaboratively,’ she said.
‘I was also really pleased that came out as a strong theme during the campaign with so many of the candidates, and it was something that I think the community was calling for as well.’

As for her aims in the next Assembly, Deputy de Sausmarez was reluctant to say exactly what role she envisaged for herself. She said she wanted to wait and see ‘how the cookies crumbled’ before making any decisions about what her political ambitions might be.
‘I think it really does matter about where the balance of skills, interests, experience and expertise lie, so that you can plug the right pegs in the right holes.
‘I am enthusiastic about so many different areas of the States but I think it is really important that we try and get the best possible fits depending on the members of the Assembly, what they’re interested in, and where their talents would be best used.’
