Dementia Friendly Guernsey, Headway and the Guernsey Welfare Service have been selected for support from the swim.

It is hosted by the Guernsey Swimming Club, which was founded in 1886, and the Castle Swim has long been part of its programme of events and become something of a Guernsey tradition.

‘It’s really popular, and it’s been increasingly popular, especially since the Covid years,’ said Guernsey Swimming Club director Kevin Penney.

Over the years, the number of charities selected has increased as the event has grown.

‘The swim takes an average of 15 minutes, but it varies based on ability and the weather,’ said Mr Penney.

Anyone from 10 years old can take part and last year saw over 700 people swim their way to La Vallette, and more than £7,500 raised for three charities. The club asks for people to give a minimum donation of £6.

‘For many people it’s a personal challenge. I would say it’s second only to the Polar Bear swim we do,’ said Mr Penney.

The Open Castle Swim is sponsored by BWCI and takes place on Sunday 17 August from Castle Cornet slipway, starting at 12.30pm.
