The charity is asking the community to donate clean, casual, and age-appropriate clothing, items like T-shirts, polo tops, jumpers and coats, which will stock a free and confidential clothing rail at its offices in St Peter Port.
The clothing rail, which has been running for the past 18 months, is a quiet lifeline for young people aged 16 to 25 who are navigating financial hardship and unstable living conditions.
Community development officer Aaron Davies explained that the need for donations has grown significantly in recent weeks. ‘A number of young people who access our services are affected by homelessness,’ he said.
‘That can mean sofa surfing, sleeping in a car, or living somewhere unsafe. Having access to suitable clothing can be a real challenge.’
Donated items are placed directly on an open access rail in the charity’s youth space, allowing individuals to take what they need at their own pace and without question.
‘Clothing can make a huge difference to a young person’s confidence, self-esteem, and readiness to re-engage with education or employment,’ Mr Davies said.
‘It’s also a basic need – warmth and protection are especially vital in harsh weather.’
Donations can be dropped off at the Action for Children office on Victoria Road during weekdays, and the public are being encouraged to spread the word to help reach more people.
‘As the only charity in Guernsey dedicated to supporting young people experiencing homelessness, we run over 20 tailored projects,’ said Mr Davies.
‘This rail is just one part of a wider effort. Ultimately, we are working toward eradicating youth homelessness in the Bailiwick.’
