Taking place over 12 days of December, the Farm Shop, based at Landes du Marche, is giving the gift of a total of 240 healthy lunches to staff on the wards at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, Les Bourgs Hospice and other care settings, thanks to a generous donation from a customer.

‘We will be delivering 20 portions from the start of this week through to Boxing Day to different nursing and care departments,’ said co-founder Jock Pettitt.

‘It can be a thankless task and this is a lovely way to say thank you. We had a lovely message back from the Emergency Department and that is part of the joy, knowing you are putting a smile on people’s faces.’

All of the lunches donated are prepared fresh each day and the Farm Shop uses high quality locally-produced ingredients in its salads, sourdough sandwiches and sausage rolls.

The initiative reflects the values of the Farm Shop, established to re-define the community’s relationship with food, providing farmers and producers a reliable route to market, and the customer with values-based local food, produced using sustainable, regenerative and high welfare methods.

Looking after nurses and carers in the community at Christmas, who will often be working long shifts and unsociable hours, was a natural extension of these values, it said.

‘There is a synergy there, supporting farmers along with putting a smile on people’s faces,’ said Mr Pettitt, adding that the initiative is something he would like to do again in the future.
