The member of staff has not been named. The authorities confirmed only the most basic details of the case, in response to enquiries made by the Guernsey Press, though it is known that investigators are not ruling out the possibility of accomplices.

Police issued a statement late yesterday. ‘Guernsey Police can confirm that last week a 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a controlled substance,’ said a spokesman.

At the same time, prison governor John de Carteret confirmed that a member of his staff had been suspended, but he could not comment further due to the criminal investigation which was under way.
