Christmas Day Polar Bear swim lives up to it name

THE Polar Bear swim lived up to its name, but a bitterly cold wind, plummeting temperature and choppy waters failed to deter almost 250 swimmers from diving into the bathing pools on Christmas Day morning.

Considering that some people were undoubtedly put off by the conditions, the Guernsey Swimming Club was pleased with the turnout for the event, which has been a community tradition for more than 60 years.

‘It was great to see so many people and friendly faces at the pools for what really is a highlight of the year,’ said club president Chris Butt.

‘It’s a great family friendly event that brings everyone together.’

He and his colleagues were waiting with certificates to present to the swimmers as they emerged from the chilly waters into the much colder air temperature.

‘It is such a nice, festive atmosphere down at the bathing pools, as always,' said seasoned Christmas Day swimmer Lauren Ogier.

‘The sea temperature was actually really nice, but it was the getting out that was cold.’

The club was pleased to welcome a healthy number of first-time swimmers this year, some as young as nine.

‘It was cold watching from the sides and was probably warmer in the water, but it was great fun,’ said Kyle Norman-Gavey, who was also the official photographer capturing memorable images for those taking part.

The club thanked the pools cafe for opening and serving hot refreshments.
