Early summer closing at Castle Cornet due to bridge repairs

Castle Cornet will be closing almost two months early this summer season as work to repair the bridge to the visitor attraction is due to start in September.

The castle will close its doors to visitors on 6 September, compared to 2 November in 2025.

The concrete deck of the existing bridge, which connects the Castle Emplacement to the Castle Breakwater, is 75 years old and has endured increasing corrosion in recent years, leading to additional safety measures, including a ban on vehicle access since 2023.

Local firm Geomarine was appointed as the contractor for the £6.2m. reconstruction in December.

Project manager Joe Armstrong said the project involved rebuilding the 95m, nine-span concrete deck and the single-span approach bridge to Castle Cornet, which both date back to the 1950s.

‘The granite piers from the original 1800s structure, which otherwise remain in good condition, will be retained and strengthened to support a newly-constructed concrete deck,’ he said.

‘The reconstruction of the main structure is expected to be completed in May 2027, allowing the bridge to reopen in time for the main summer season. If any finishing works remain, the bridge will still reopen as planned, with final works completed in autumn 2027.’

He added that every effort was being made to minimise disruption to Castle Cornet and businesses on the Castle Emplacement while this work was carried out.

‘Works have been scheduled outside the main visitor season to reduce impact and support normal business operations during peak months,’ he said.

‘The programme also includes contingency for weather disruption, reflecting the challenges of a major marine construction project, including phases that are dependent on tidal conditions.’

The castle is currently closed for the winter and is due to reopen on 25 March.

Helen Glencross, head of culture and heritage services, added that Guernsey Museums had been heavily involved in the bridge reconstruction project.

‘That includes representation on the project board to ensure our interests are considered,’ she said.

‘While some disruption may occur during the shoulder seasons, when our visitor numbers are lower, this work is essential to secure long-term access to Castle Cornet for the future enjoyment of both islanders and visitors.’
